Veteran journalist and Arise Television presenter, Reuben Abati, has criticised Lere Olayinka, a media aide to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over a video showing him kneeling before his boss. Abati described the act as an unhealthy example of political loyalty taken too far, saying it sends the wrong message about leadership and public service.
Speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Abati explained that sycophancy has always existed in Nigerian politics, but that there should be limits. He recalled how public officials in the past also showed excessive submission to leaders, sometimes kneeling or even crawling, but stressed that such behaviour does not promote respect or good governance.
He added that former President Goodluck Jonathan often discouraged people from kneeling before him, reminding them that he was not a monarch. According to Abati, public office holders are meant to serve the people, not be treated like kings, and displays of personal loyalty should not replace professionalism.
Abati warned that political empires and the culture around them do not last forever. He urged both leaders and their supporters to focus more on accountability and service rather than praise and public displays of loyalty, noting that every political era has its limits.
