Beware of fake condoms in markets – NAFDAC warns Nigerians

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians to be careful about fake and substandard condoms being sold in some markets across the country. The agency said these fake products can easily tear, fail to protect users, and increase the risk of unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

NAFDAC explained that some traders import or produce low-quality condoms and package them to look like well-known brands. Because many buyers cannot easily tell the difference, they may unknowingly purchase unsafe products that do not meet health and safety standards.

The agency advised Nigerians to buy condoms only from registered pharmacies, hospitals, and trusted stores. NAFDAC also encouraged consumers to check for proper labels, expiry dates, registration numbers, and sealed packaging before using any product.

NAFDAC said it is increasing inspections and raids to remove fake condoms from circulation and punish those responsible. The agency urged the public to report any suspicious products so that dangerous items can be quickly traced and withdrawn from the market.
