Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has filed a criminal complaint against some Facebook users over alleged death threats and defamatory statements made against him online. He said the posts crossed the line from criticism into dangerous and criminal behaviour that could threaten his personal safety.
According to his lawyers, the offensive messages included threats to his life and claims that damage his reputation. They explained that the action was taken to protect him and also to discourage the growing culture of harassment, abuse and false accusations on social media platforms.
The complaint has reportedly been submitted to law enforcement agencies for investigation. Authorities are expected to trace the accounts involved, determine the identities of those behind them and decide whether charges should be filed based on the outcome of the investigation.
Supporters of Sheikh Gumi say the case highlights the need for responsibility in online communication, while others believe it will test how Nigeria’s laws deal with cyber threats and defamation. The matter is now expected to proceed through the legal system in the coming weeks.
