Sanwo-Olu outlines plan to integrate proposed state police into Lagos security framework

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has explained how the proposed state police will be blended into the existing security structure of Lagos. According to him, the goal is to strengthen safety across the state while avoiding clashes with federal security agencies. He said the plan focuses on cooperation, clear roles, and respect for the law.

The governor noted that the state police, when approved, will work alongside the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies. Rather than replacing federal authorities, the new structure is designed to support intelligence gathering, community policing, and faster response to local security threats. Sanwo-Olu stressed that coordination will remain central to the system.

Sanwo-Olu also highlighted training, funding, and accountability as key pillars of the plan. Officers of the proposed state police will undergo proper professional training and operate under strict oversight to prevent abuse of power. He assured residents that Lagos would adopt global best practices to ensure transparency and discipline.

He added that community involvement will play a major role in the success of state policing. By working closely with traditional leaders, local councils, and residents, the state police is expected to improve trust and security at the grassroots level. Sanwo-Olu maintained that the initiative is part of broader efforts to keep Lagos safe as the population continues to grow.
