Former senator Shehu Sani has reacted to reports that Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is threatening a businessman with a ₦100 billion lawsuit. According to Sani, Dangote has every legal right to seek redress in court if he believes his reputation or business interests have been harmed. He noted that access to justice is a fundamental right available to all citizens, regardless of status or wealth.
Sani explained that lawsuits are part of democratic systems and should not automatically be seen as intimidation. He stressed that courts exist to resolve disputes peacefully and fairly, adding that individuals who feel wronged should rely on legal processes rather than public attacks or emotional reactions.
The former lawmaker also pointed out that those who make allegations against influential figures must be ready to defend their claims. He said freedom of speech comes with responsibility, and anyone making serious accusations should have evidence to support them when challenged in court.
The threat of a ₦100bn lawsuit has continued to generate debate online, with many Nigerians divided on the issue. While some see it as excessive, others agree with Shehu Sani that Dangote is simply exercising his constitutional right to protect his name and business through lawful means.
