The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly condemned the Owo massacre, describing the attack as a painful reminder of the rising insecurity in the country. CAN stated clearly that no Nigerian should ever lose their life simply because of their faith. According to the group, the incident has deepened fear among worshippers and raised serious questions about safety in places of worship.
CAN stressed that Nigeria is a multi-religious nation built on tolerance and mutual respect, and attacks driven by hatred or extremism threaten national unity. The association warned that allowing such violence to continue unchecked could further divide communities and weaken trust among citizens. It urged leaders at all levels to speak with one voice against religious killings.
The association also called on the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure that those behind the Owo massacre are identified and brought to justice. CAN noted that justice for victims is important not only for healing but also to deter future attacks. It added that proactive security measures must be put in place to protect churches, mosques, and other public spaces.
Finally, CAN appealed to Nigerians to remain calm and resist the urge to retaliate. It encouraged citizens to support peace, dialogue, and lawful means of addressing grievances. According to the group, lasting peace can only be achieved when the government fulfills its duty to protect lives and when Nigerians stand together against all forms of violence.
