Former Super Eagles captain and coach, Sunday Oliseh, has weighed in on the exclusion of goalkeeper Maduka Okoye from Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Oliseh said the decision was influenced by intense criticism and pressure the shot-stopper faced after previous outings for the national team. According to him, the mental toll on Okoye played a major role in the coach’s choice.
Speaking on the situation, Oliseh noted that Okoye was “torn to pieces” by fans and pundits following costly mistakes in past tournaments. He explained that such harsh reactions can affect a player’s confidence, especially in a sensitive position like goalkeeping. Oliseh stressed that AFCON is a high-pressure competition where mental strength is just as important as talent.
The former midfielder also defended the technical crew, saying squad selection must consider form, confidence, and team balance. He added that sometimes leaving out a player is not about punishment, but about protecting the individual and the team from further damage. Oliseh believes Okoye still has a future with the Super Eagles if he rebuilds confidence and consistency.
As Nigeria prepares for AFCON 2025, Oliseh urged fans to support the chosen players rather than dwell on omissions. He called for patience and understanding, reminding supporters that national team success depends on unity. With expectations high, the Super Eagles will hope their selected goalkeepers rise to the occasion and deliver when it matters most.
