Customs intercepts N82m worth of contraband in Bauchi

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has recorded a major success against smuggling with the seizure of contraband valued at over N82 million in Bauchi. The Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone D, carried out the operations within 10 days, covering several states in the North-East and North-Central regions. The development shows renewed efforts by Customs to strengthen border security and protect the economy.

Speaking at a press briefing in Bauchi, the Comptroller of the Unit, Abdullahi Kaila, said the seizures reflect the Service’s zero-tolerance stance on smuggling. He explained that intensified patrols and intelligence-led operations helped officers intercept illegal goods moving across borders. According to him, the achievement proves that Customs policies are now being fully enforced on the ground.

Items seized include large quantities of petrol, second-hand clothes, used shoes, foreign pasta, vegetable oil, and washing soap. Customs said the total Duty Paid Value of the intercepted goods stood at N82.1 million. Kaila added that improved professionalism among officers and collaboration with other security agencies have reduced smuggling of petroleum products, drugs, and wildlife items in the region.

The Customs boss warned traders to obey the law, stressing that smugglers would face stiff consequences. He assured the public that enforcement would continue alongside community engagement and public awareness campaigns. Kaila reaffirmed Customs’ commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s borders while supporting economic growth and national development.
