Nigerian Army to overhaul training, strengthen special forces

The Nigerian Army has announced a major overhaul of its training programs to develop a more professional and agile force capable of tackling evolving security threats. Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, revealed during the annual Army conference in Lagos that all training curricula across Army educational institutions will be updated starting next year to match operational realities.

Special emphasis will be placed on the Army’s Special Forces and Army Aviation units. Measures include enhancing the capabilities of the Special Forces School and ensuring troops are well-prepared for intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance, target acquisition, and cyber operations. The Army aims to adopt realistic, mission-focused exercises to improve operational readiness across all units.

The overhaul will be centrally coordinated by Army Headquarters through the Department of Training, ensuring consistency and efficiency in implementing new standards. The Army leadership stressed that the reforms would reflect the changing security landscape, equipping soldiers with the skills needed to meet contemporary challenges.

Troop welfare remains a key focus. Plans include addressing accommodation shortages, renovating existing facilities, building new barracks, and providing post-service housing for retired personnel. The Army’s commitment highlights a holistic approach, combining professional development with improved living conditions for service members.
