The Labour Party (LP) has strengthened its presence in the Abia State House of Assembly following the defection of a serving lawmaker, Obianyi, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The move further tilts the balance of power in favour of the ruling party in the state legislature.
Obianyi explained that his decision to leave the PDP was based on consultations with his constituents and political associates. He said the Labour Party offers a better platform to support the current administration’s development agenda and to deliver effective representation to the people.
Leaders of the Labour Party in Abia welcomed the defection, describing it as a vote of confidence in the party’s leadership and policies. They noted that the growing number of lawmakers joining LP reflects public support for governance reforms and people-focused programmes in the state.
Meanwhile, the PDP has downplayed the defection, insisting it remains a strong opposition party in Abia. Political analysts say the development could reshape legislative dynamics ahead of future elections, as LP continues to consolidate power in the state assembly.
