We have to respect AFCON — Everton boss Moyes

Everton manager David Moyes has said that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) deserves full respect from football clubs across Europe. He explained that the tournament is an important part of world football and should not be seen as a disturbance to club schedules. According to him, teams must understand that African players have a duty to represent their countries.

Moyes noted that AFCON often clashes with major league fixtures, making clubs worry about losing key players during the competition. However, he stressed that the commitment of African players to their national teams should not be questioned. He added that AFCON plays a big role in promoting African talent and uniting countries on the continent.

The Everton boss also said that instead of complaining, clubs should plan well ahead of the tournament. He stated that good preparation helps teams cope when their players travel for international duties. Moyes encouraged managers to support their African players, saying it boosts confidence and strengthens relationships within the squad.

He concluded by explaining that football is global, and respecting all football competitions is the right thing to do. Moyes urged fans and clubs to appreciate AFCON’s value and recognise the passion that comes with representing one’s country. He said Everton will continue to support their players who participate in the tournament.
