More Bodies Recovered from Niger Mining Pit Two Months After Collapse

Two months after the collapse of a mining pit in Galkogo, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, four more bodies have been recovered, bringing the total number of recovered victims to 14. The tragic incident occurred on June 3, 2024, at a site managed by African Minerals and Logistics Limited, where many laborers were trapped.

The District Head of Galadima-Kogo, Mallam Umar Aliyu, confirmed that the bodies were found on August 8. The remains have been transported to the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) Specialist Hospital mortuary in Minna.

According to Mallam Aliyu, two of the victims were Muslims and are set to be buried on Friday at the Emir’s Palace in Minna. The other two victims, who were Christians, will be returned to their hometowns in Nasarawa State at the request of their families.

This discovery has brought further grief to the community as they continue to deal with the aftermath of the disaster. The incident has raised concerns about the safety conditions at the mining site and the response to such emergencies. Families of the victims, along with the local community, are still coming to terms with the losses and are seeking justice and accountability for the lives lost.

The ongoing recovery efforts show the determination to ensure that all those who were trapped are found, providing some closure to the grieving families. However, the incident also highlights the need for better safety measures in mining operations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
