Benin Coup: Tinubu’s intervention backed by Constitution – Ex-lawmaker

A former Nigerian lawmaker has said President Bola Tinubu’s intervention following the attempted coup in the Republic of Benin is fully backed by the Nigerian Constitution. According to him, the president acted within his legal powers to protect regional stability and Nigeria’s national interest.

The ex-lawmaker explained that the Constitution allows the president to take decisive steps when Nigeria’s security or regional peace is threatened. He added that instability in neighbouring countries can easily affect Nigeria, especially in border communities and trade routes.

He also noted that Nigeria’s role within ECOWAS gives it responsibility to support democratic governance in West Africa. The former lawmaker stressed that Tinubu’s decision aligns with Nigeria’s long-standing commitment to peacekeeping and regional cooperation.

The lawmaker urged critics to focus on the bigger picture rather than politicising the issue. He said maintaining peace in the sub-region is vital for economic growth and security, and Nigeria must continue to play a leadership role when democracy is under threat.
