Benin coup: Tinubu acted in Nigeria’s interest by deploying military to stop insurrection – Governors

Governors across Nigeria have defended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to deploy military personnel to help stop the attempted coup in the Republic of Benin. They said the action was not only necessary but also in Nigeria’s national interest. According to them, instability in a neighbouring country could easily spill into Nigeria, affecting trade, security, and border communities. Stopping the insurrection early was therefore a strategic move to protect the nation.

The governors explained that Nigeria, as a major power in West Africa, has a duty to support peace within the region. They noted that allowing a coup to succeed in a neighbouring state could encourage similar attempts elsewhere. They praised Tinubu for reacting swiftly and showing leadership at a time when the region needed stability. In their words, preventing the coup was a step toward safeguarding democracy in West Africa.

They also addressed criticisms claiming the deployment was unnecessary. The governors said those arguments ignored the dangers posed by political breakdowns in nearby countries. They insisted that Nigeria cannot afford to watch crises grow on its borders only to deal with the consequences later. According to them, proactive intervention is always better than allowing conflict to spread.

In conclusion, the governors called for unity and understanding from Nigerians, stressing that the president’s action was taken for the country’s long-term peace and security. They urged citizens to support regional efforts to maintain democratic governance. For them, halting the Benin coup attempt was not interference but a responsible act meant to protect Nigeria and the entire sub-region.
