Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed that he still does not know his real age with certainty. Speaking at a public event, Obasanjo explained that record keeping during his childhood was poor, which made it difficult for many people of his generation to know their exact birth dates. He added that the age written on his documents was only an estimate based on information provided by elders at the time.
Obasanjo noted that although he has lived a long and impactful life, the question of his precise age continues to follow him. He joked that regardless of the uncertainty, he remains grateful for good health and strength. The former president also said that his experience is not unique, as many Nigerians born in rural communities face the same challenge.
He further explained that modern technology and improved documentation now make it easier for young Nigerians to know their exact birth dates. Obasanjo praised the progress made in civil registration and encouraged the government to keep improving systems that help citizens maintain accurate personal records.
Despite not knowing his actual age, Obasanjo said it has never stopped him from serving Nigeria or contributing to national development. He stressed that what matters most is living a purposeful life, not just counting the years.
