ECOWAS deploys standby force to Benin after foiled coup attempt

ECOWAS has deployed a standby military force to Benin Republic after a foiled coup attempt threatened the country’s stability. The regional body said the move became necessary to prevent further unrest and protect democratic governance. Security sources confirmed that the attempted takeover was quickly suppressed by Benin’s authorities, but ECOWAS stepped in to reinforce peace.

According to officials, the standby force will support Benin’s security agencies in monitoring sensitive areas, gathering intelligence, and deterring any renewed threats. ECOWAS said it remains committed to ensuring that no member state is destabilised by unconstitutional changes in government. The organisation also warned that it would not tolerate any actions aimed at undermining peace in the region.

Leaders of the regional bloc praised the swift response of Benin’s government in stopping the coup plotters. They noted that the deployment is a preventive measure to maintain calm, protect citizens, and reassure neighbouring countries. ECOWAS emphasised that democracy must be defended at all costs.

Citizens have been urged to remain calm as normal activities continue across the country. ECOWAS assured that the standby force will work closely with Benin’s security agencies and withdraw once stability is fully guaranteed. The regional body restated its commitment to safeguarding peace, unity, and democratic order in West Africa.
