Why it’s not easy tracking bandits with technology — Presidency

The Presidency has revealed that using technology to track bandits across Nigeria is far more challenging than many people assume. Officials explained that these criminal groups operate deep inside forests and remote areas where communication signals are weak or completely unavailable. This makes real-time tracking almost impossible, even with advanced tools.

According to the Presidency, many bandits also avoid modern devices that can be traced. They reportedly move without phones, use human messengers instead of digital communication and live in camps that are constantly on the move. This reduces the effectiveness of surveillance equipment designed to detect electronic footprints.

Security experts within the government added that the country’s vast land mass and rough terrain create additional obstacles. Drone operations and satellite monitoring cannot cover every location at once, especially in areas without clear visibility. They noted that technology helps security forces, but it cannot replace on-ground intelligence gathering.

The Presidency said the government is working to expand its technological capacity while improving collaborations between security agencies. It stressed that defeating banditry requires a combination of tools, human intelligence and community cooperation, rather than relying solely on gadgets or digital tracking.
