Lead counsel’s absence halts trial of ex-acting AGF over alleged N868m fraud

The trial of a former acting Accountant-General of the Federation facing allegations of N868 million fraud was put on hold after his lead counsel failed to appear in court. The unexpected absence disrupted the proceedings, forcing the judge to adjourn the matter to a later date. Court officials noted that the defence team did not give any prior notice explaining why the lawyer would be unavailable.

During the hearing, the prosecution expressed disappointment, stressing that the continued delays were slowing down the progress of the case. They maintained that the charges are serious and deserve timely attention, especially since the matter involves public funds. The prosecution team urged the court to ensure the defence stops causing unnecessary adjournments.

The judge, while acknowledging the importance of legal representation, emphasized that such delays hinder justice. He warned that the court would no longer tolerate repeated excuses or disruptions. The case, which has attracted public interest due to the large amount involved, is now expected to continue on the new adjourned date.

The former AGF is being tried over allegations of mismanaging government funds and committing financial offences. Nigerians are closely watching the case as many see it as a test of the country’s fight against corruption. The adjournment has once again raised concerns about how long high-profile financial crime cases take to reach judgment.
