INEC to suspend first phase of continuous voter registration in Benue

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to suspend the first phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Benue State. According to the commission, the suspension is part of its nationwide schedule, which allows officials to review progress, fix challenges, and prepare for the next phase. INEC explained that the first phase has helped thousands of new voters register, but the break is necessary to improve logistics and ensure better service.

INEC officials in Benue noted that the registration centres witnessed large turnout, especially among young people. However, they also recorded issues such as slow machines, long queues, and staff shortages in some local government areas. The temporary suspension will give the commission time to fix these problems and reposition the exercise for greater efficiency when the second phase begins.

The commission encouraged residents who have not yet registered to remain patient. It assured the public that the next phase would reopen soon, giving everyone more opportunity to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). INEC also reminded citizens that voter registration is an important civic duty and urged them to take advantage of the next window once it resumes.

Community groups and civil society organisations in Benue welcomed the update, saying it will help INEC improve the process. They also called on the commission to deploy more machines, increase staff strength, and ensure rural areas are adequately covered in the next phase. Many believe that a smooth registration exercise will help strengthen participation in future elections.
