Connie Chiume, the distinguished South African actress celebrated for her impactful roles in “Black Panther” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” has passed away at the age of 72. Born on June 5, 1952, in Welkom, South Africa, Connie Chiume was the fifth of nine children. She began her career in a field far removed from acting, initially training as a nurse and later graduating with a degree in teaching in 1976. Her journey into the arts began in Greece, where she joined the cast of the musical “Sola Sola,” marking the start of a remarkable career.
Chiume’s breakthrough came in 1989 with her role in the South African TV series “Inkom’ Edla Yodwa,” which established her as a leading figure in South African television. She continued to build her reputation with roles in various series, including her award-winning performance in “Soul City,” where she earned the NTVA Avanti Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series in 2000. Her role as Stella Moloi in “Zone 14” won her the SAFTA for Best Supporting Actress in 2009.
In 2015, Chiume took on a significant role in the popular soap opera “Rhythm City,” further showcasing her versatility and skill. Her international fame grew with her portrayal of Zawavari, a Mining Tribe Elder, in the groundbreaking film “Black Panther” in 2018.
