Ambassadorial nominees: Scrutinise each candidate thoroughly — Baba-Ahmed tells NASS

Prominent rights advocate Baba-Ahmed has urged the National Assembly (NASS) to thoroughly scrutinise every ambassadorial nominee before confirmation. He said lawmakers must look beyond names and party ties and make sure each candidate has the right experience, character, and respect for Nigeria’s interests.

Baba-Ahmed warned that careless approval of diplomats could damage the country’s image abroad. He stressed that ambassadors represent Nigeria and must be chosen for competence, not as rewards for loyalty. He also called for transparency during screening to build public trust in the process.

The activist asked NASS to probe nominees’ records, possible conflicts of interest, and past statements that could harm diplomatic relations. He suggested involving relevant experts and civil society groups in the vetting to ensure a fair and thorough review. Baba-Ahmed said this approach would strengthen Nigeria’s foreign service.

He concluded by reminding lawmakers that good ambassadorial picks can attract investment, protect citizens abroad, and boost Nigeria’s standing in the world. Baba-Ahmed urged patience and careful work, saying the long-term benefits of proper vetting far outweigh short-term political gains.
