Activist drags Edo Security Network, Police, others to court, demands over N500m damages over alleged assault

A human rights activist has taken the Edo Security Network, the Nigeria Police, and several other parties to court over an alleged assault. According to the activist, he was unlawfully attacked and humiliated during an encounter with security personnel in Benin City. He claimed that the incident caused him physical injuries and emotional distress, prompting his decision to seek justice through the courts.

The activist is demanding more than N500 million in damages, arguing that his rights were violated without justification. He stated that security agencies should protect citizens, not harm them, adding that such acts weaken public trust. His lawyer explained that the lawsuit aims to hold the involved officers accountable and ensure that similar abuses do not happen to other residents.

The case has sparked reactions from civil society groups, many of whom support the activist’s move. They noted that allegations of brutality and misconduct by security operatives have become too frequent and must be addressed. Some groups also called for a full investigation into the incident to uncover what truly happened and whether any officers acted outside the law.

Meanwhile, authorities from the Edo Security Network and the Police have been urged to respond to the allegations. Legal observers say the outcome of the case could set an important precedent for handling similar complaints in the future. The court is expected to fix a hearing date soon as the matter continues to draw public attention.
