A major fire outbreak has destroyed more than 500 stalls at the popular Shuwaki market in Kano, leaving many traders in tears as they watched their goods go up in flames. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the day, spread quickly due to the tightly packed wooden shops, making it difficult for people to salvage their belongings.
Eyewitnesses said the fire started from one section of the market before moving rapidly to other areas. Emergency responders and volunteers tried to contain the flames, but the extent of the damage was already severe by the time firefighters arrived. Many traders lamented that they lost everything, including goods bought on credit.
Officials from the Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire. They assured the public that more details would be released soon and encouraged traders to adhere to safety guidelines to prevent similar disasters. The officials also emphasized the need for proper fire safety infrastructure in markets across the state.
Local authorities have promised to support affected traders as they begin the difficult task of rebuilding their businesses. Some community leaders also appealed to the government to provide better facilities and ensure that markets are equipped with fire prevention tools. They noted that repeated fire incidents in Kano markets highlight the need for urgent reforms.
