Lagos Assembly passes University of Medicine Bill into law

The Lagos State House of Assembly has officially passed the University of Medicine Bill into law. This new law clears the way for the establishment of a dedicated medical university aimed at improving healthcare training in the state. Lawmakers said the decision supports Lagos’ long-term vision of strengthening medical education.

During the deliberation, members of the Assembly noted that Lagos needs more skilled health professionals to meet growing population demands. They explained that a specialized university will help train doctors, nurses, and other medical experts with modern tools and updated learning methods.

The bill outlines how the new institution will operate, including its governance structure, academic programs, and admission standards. Lawmakers stressed that proper management and a strong curriculum are important for producing graduates who can compete globally.

The Assembly also highlighted that the university will create more opportunities for young people aspiring to study medicine. They added that the institution will contribute to research, innovation, and the overall improvement of the healthcare sector in Lagos State.

With the bill now passed, the next step is for the government to begin implementation. Stakeholders expect that the new university will boost the state’s healthcare capacity and reduce the shortage of medical professionals in Nigeria.
