CBN cautions against mishandling of Naira

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has again warned Nigerians to stop damaging, abusing, or mishandling the Naira. The bank said many people still fold, tear, or write on the currency, which reduces its quality and increases the cost of printing new notes.

According to the CBN, the Naira is a national symbol and should be treated with care at all times. The bank reminded the public that spraying money at parties, squeezing notes in pockets, and stepping on currency are punishable offences under Nigerian law.

Officials noted that poor handling makes the notes wear out quickly, forcing the government to spend more money on replacing them. They stressed that this avoidable cost affects the economy and puts pressure on financial operations nationwide.

The CBN called on citizens, traders, transport operators, and event organizers to support the campaign for proper handling of currency. The bank also urged Nigerians to make use of electronic payments to reduce the excessive use of cash.

Security agencies have been encouraged to enforce existing laws against Naira abuse. The apex bank assured the public that it will continue educating Nigerians to value and protect the nation’s currency.
