Nigeria failed to protect schoolchildren – US Senate vows to hold govt accountable

The US Senate has condemned Nigeria over its inability to protect schoolchildren from kidnappings and attacks, vowing to hold the Nigerian government accountable for ongoing security lapses. Lawmakers expressed concern over repeated incidents of abductions in northern states, describing the situation as a threat to education, children’s welfare, and human rights.

Senators highlighted that Nigeria’s failure to safeguard students reflects systemic security gaps, including inadequate policing, poor intelligence, and lack of proactive intervention in schools and vulnerable communities. They emphasized that the global community is watching Nigeria’s response to these crises closely.

The Senate also indicated that international pressure and diplomatic engagement would be used to ensure Nigeria strengthens its protective measures. Lawmakers stressed the importance of enforcing existing policies, improving school security infrastructure, and holding officials responsible for negligence in safeguarding students.

Finally, the US Senate called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s security strategy, stressing that protecting children is a priority. They encouraged collaboration with international partners, civil society, and local authorities to prevent further kidnappings and ensure that education is not disrupted by insecurity.
