‘Reckless, uncultured, unguarded’ – Ogun monarch lambasts Fayose for insulting Obasanjo

An Ogun State traditional ruler has strongly condemned former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, for making disparaging remarks about former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The monarch described Fayose’s comments as “reckless, uncultured, and unguarded,” insisting that such language towards an elder statesman was unacceptable. He said leaders, especially those who have held high office, must show restraint and respect when speaking publicly.

The monarch noted that Obasanjo remains a national figure whose contributions to Nigeria cannot be dismissed because of political differences. He added that attacking him with insults only shows a lack of maturity and undermines the values of Yoruba culture, which places high importance on speaking respectfully to elders. According to him, public figures should set better examples for younger generations.

He further warned that Nigeria’s political environment is already tense, and inflammatory statements could worsen divisions. Instead of trading insults, he urged political actors to engage in constructive dialogue that would promote unity and national progress. He said disagreements should be expressed respectfully and not turned into personal attacks.

The monarch called on Fayose to retract his statements and apologize, stressing that such behavior does not reflect well on a former governor. He also appealed to other politicians to learn from the incident and maintain decorum when addressing issues involving elder statesmen.
