Why ex-Bayelsa governor, Sylva is facing political prosecution – APC chieftain, Birakumo

An APC chieftain, Birakumo Ebitimi, has claimed that former Bayelsa State governor, Timipre Sylva, is being targeted for what he described as political prosecution. According to Birakumo, the actions taken against Sylva are not rooted in genuine legal concerns but are instead driven by political motives aimed at weakening his influence within Bayelsa’s political landscape.

Birakumo argued that Sylva’s rising popularity and continued relevance in the state’s politics have made him a threat to certain interests, prompting efforts to discredit him. He insisted that while political disagreements are normal, using legal tools to intimidate opponents undermines democracy and fairness.

He further urged institutions to remain neutral and avoid being used as instruments of political control. Birakumo stressed that Bayelsa’s political space should be open, competitive, and free from targeted actions that could silence opposition voices.

As the conversation grows, many observers are watching to see how the situation unfolds and whether Sylva’s camp will respond formally to the claims of political victimisation.
