A senior chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has insisted that plans to hold a national convention at this time are unlawful. According to him, the party has yet to resolve key legal and internal leadership issues, making any attempt to organise a convention a clear violation of the PDP constitution. He argued that certain court cases challenging the legitimacy of the current leadership must first be concluded before any major gathering can take place.
The chieftain further explained that the party risks plunging itself into deeper crisis if it proceeds with the convention without addressing these unresolved matters. He warned that such action could lead to more factional disputes and potential legal penalties. According to him, the proper procedures must be followed to avoid future complications.
He also accused some members of pushing for the convention for personal political gains rather than the party’s collective interest. He said their actions could destabilise the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that unity and legality should come first before any political ambition.
The party elder therefore urged the PDP leadership to obey existing court orders and restore internal harmony before moving forward. He emphasized that only a legally constituted convention can produce credible decisions and restore confidence among party loyalists and Nigerians at large.
