Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has weighed in on the recent clash involving Minister Nyesom Wike and some military personnel, stating that Wike acted within his legal rights. According to Falana, nothing the Minister did amounted to a violation of the law, and his actions were in line with the powers granted to him as a public official.
Falana explained that the soldiers involved went beyond their constitutional duties. He argued that members of the armed forces are not permitted to interfere in civil matters unless properly authorised. By stepping into a situation that did not require military involvement, Falana said they clearly overstepped professional boundaries and must be called to order.
The senior lawyer stressed that Nigeria already struggles with issues of abuse of power, and incidents like this raise important questions about the role of the military in civilian spaces. Falana urged the authorities to clearly define responsibilities and ensure that security agencies respect the rule of law at all times.
As public debate continues, Nigerians are calling for proper investigations to prevent similar conflicts in the future. Falana’s position has also renewed conversations about military discipline, civil authority, and constitutional rights, placing the spotlight once again on governance and accountability.
