A group of protesters on Monday stormed the National Assembly in Abuja to demand the immediate confirmation of the nominee for Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The demonstrators, made up of civil society groups and concerned citizens, insisted that the Senate must act quickly to complete the screening and approval process.
The protesters held placards and chanted slogans, saying the delay in confirming the nominee was creating uncertainty in Nigeria’s power sector. According to them, effective leadership at NERC is crucial to improving electricity regulation, protecting consumers, and supporting ongoing reforms in the energy industry.
Speaking to journalists, leaders of the protest argued that the power sector cannot afford leadership gaps, especially at a time when Nigerians are struggling with unstable power supply and rising electricity tariffs. They called on lawmakers to prioritize national interest and dismiss what they described as political interference.
Security operatives were stationed around the National Assembly complex to maintain order, while the protesters peacefully presented their demands. They stressed that their action was not political but aimed at ensuring stability and accountability in electricity governance.
The Senate has yet to respond to the protest, but observers believe the public pressure may speed up the confirmation process. Nigerians are watching closely as the leadership decision at NERC is expected to influence future electricity policies and reforms.
