Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has withdrawn the Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) issued for the Edo Museum of West African Arts (EMOWAA). The decision marks a major shift in the state government’s position regarding the controversial museum project.
The governor explained that the state would no longer support the current arrangement for the museum’s land use. According to him, the revocation is part of efforts to ensure public land is used strictly for the benefit of Edo people. He stated that any project occupying government property must align with the state’s development goals and serve community interests.
The museum project has sparked debate in recent years, with some residents and stakeholders questioning the transparency and purpose of the initiative. The governor added that the state will review the situation and take decisions that promote accountability and fairness.
Gov Okpebholo reassured the public that the government remains committed to preserving the state’s cultural heritage, but emphasized that such efforts must follow proper procedures and protect public interest.
