Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah, has called for a moral and national reset in Nigeria, saying the country must “reload” itself to regain direction and rebuild a strong national identity. Speaking at the 60th birthday book launch of former presidential aide and ARISE News broadcaster, Dr. Reuben Abati, the Bishop expressed concern over the country’s fading shared values and national ideals.
Bishop Kukah lamented that Nigeria lacks common myths, values, and historical symbols that unite its people. According to him, the nation has gradually drifted away from the moral and intellectual standards that once guided public life. He described the country as one filled with broken aspirations, where the dreams of many citizens have been interrupted by systemic failures.
“We need to reload,” he emphasized, urging Nigerians to reflect on the state of the nation, its choices, and the future path. The Bishop stressed that without a foundation of strong values and a shared national story, the country will continue to move without a clear purpose.
He further encouraged leaders and citizens to rethink Nigeria’s values, institutions, and moral structure. According to him, real progress will only come when the nation rebuilds its moral compass and redefines its collective identity.
Bishop Kukah’s remarks come at a time when many Nigerians are calling for reforms and renewed leadership that will restore trust and unity across the country.
