‘Your’re misleading Nigerians, we’ll resume strike – ASUU to Education Minister

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Jos chapter, has criticised the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, for making what it described as misleading claims about the Federal Government fulfilling agreements with university workers.

In a statement signed by its branch chairman, Prof. Jurbe Joseph Molwus, ASUU warned that it will resume its suspended strike if pending issues are not resolved within the next two weeks. The union reminded Nigerians that it had earlier given the government a four-week ultimatum on October 22, 2025, but said little progress has been made since then.

According to ASUU, members are still waiting for several outstanding payments, including withheld salaries, wage award arrears, promotion arrears, and unpaid salaries affecting some lecturers. “What we need are credit alerts, not misleading statements,” the statement stressed, adding that expectations were high ahead of the union’s NEC meeting scheduled for November 8–9.

The union also disputed claims that funds had been released to universities, noting that the announced ₦50 billion revitalisation fund has not reached any institution. It further dismissed the minister’s claim that ₦2.3 billion had been paid out to settle arrears, describing the figure as inadequate and insufficient to cover even a few universities.

ASUU urged the government to act quickly, warning that failure to meet commitments could result in another nationwide university shutdown.
