Again, one dead, eight rescued as three-storey building collapses in Lagos

A fresh building collapse in the Apapa area of Lagos has claimed one life, while eight people were rescued alive. The tragic incident happened on Thursday at No. 28 Baale Alayabiagba Street, in the Alayabiagba community of Ajegunle, Apapa.

According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the three-storey building, which had a penthouse, caved in around 11:09 a.m. after distress calls were made by residents. Emergency teams arrived at the scene and found several workers trapped under the rubble.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed that eight adult men were rescued and immediately treated by the Lagos State Ambulance Service before being taken to Ajeromi General Hospital. Sadly, one adult male was recovered dead.

Eyewitnesses told reporters that the building was being manually demolished when the collapse suddenly happened, trapping workers inside. The exact cause of the collapse is still under investigation.

Emergency responders on-ground included LASEMA, Lagos Fire Service, LASBCA, NEMA, LNSC, and the police. Officials say search and rescue operations have been completed, and authorities will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This is the second building collapse in Lagos this week. On Monday, a two-storey building collapsed at Cole Street in the Oyingbo area, trapping several residents.
