Southwest governors and Afenifere leaders have called for stronger unity and teamwork to support peace, democracy, and development in the region. They made this appeal during the Southwest stakeholders’ meeting held in Akure, with the theme “Strengthening democracy through dialogue; assessing progress and charting the future.” Speakers stressed that political differences should not stop leaders from working together for the good of the Yoruba people and Nigeria.
Speaking through his deputy, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun said the region must continue its tradition of leadership by promoting accountability, citizen participation, and innovation. He reminded leaders that progress comes when governments listen to the needs of the people, not just talk to them. He also praised the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and applauded Ondo State for hosting the dialogue.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who chairs the Southwest Governors Forum, urged the region to reclaim its position as the national leader in education, technology, and good governance. He emphasized that the Southwest should remain the “light of the country” and a model of democratic values and development. According to him, unity and shared vision will help the zone drive growth and stability.
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa described the meeting as a sign of strong cooperation among Southwest institutions. He noted that democracy grows stronger when leaders engage citizens in open dialogue and constructive discussions. The governor said that despite existing challenges, leaders must continue to work hand-in-hand to protect democratic values and improve the lives of the people.
Afenifere leader Chief Reuben Fasoranti, represented by former secretary Femi Okurounmu, called on Southwest leaders to return to the core Yoruba principles of welfare, unity, and development. He urged political leaders, traditional rulers, and stakeholders to rise above party interests and stay committed to the region’s progress. Top government officials, traditional rulers, and former governors also attended the event.
