The Presidency has released a new list of individuals granted clemency by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The updated list includes Nigerians who received presidential pardon, those whose death sentences were changed to life imprisonment, and others who benefitted from mercy based on humanitarian and legal considerations.
According to the information shared, 15 people were fully pardoned by the Tinubu administration. Some of the notable names on the list include late environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, late military officer Mamman Vatsa, and former lawmaker Farouk Lawan. Others include Mrs. Anastasia Daniel Nwaobia, Barr. Hussaini Alhaji Umar and Herbert Macaulay.
In addition to the pardons, four individuals previously sentenced to death have had their penalties reduced to life imprisonment. These include Emmanuel Baba, Abubakar Usman, Khalifa Umar and Mohammed Umar. The decision underscores the administration’s review of long-standing capital punishment cases.
Also, 15 more individuals received clemency for different offenses, meaning either sentence reduction or other forms of leniency. Those included in this category are Oroka Michael Chibueze, Ex-Corporal Michael Bawa, Chinedu Stanley, Emmanuel Yusuf and others.
The fresh list is part of President Tinubu’s exercise of constitutional powers under Section 175, aimed at giving deserving persons a second chance while maintaining justice and public interest. The move continues nationwide efforts to balance mercy with security and fairness in the justice system.
