Defection: North-Central APC Forum insists on Mutfwang, rejects Plateau party leaders’ resolution

The North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has rejected a resolution passed by Plateau State APC leaders opposing Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s possible defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. The Plateau APC leaders had, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Jos on October 17, 2025, unanimously moved a motion against accepting the governor into the party, a position the Forum described as selfish and unproductive.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by its chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, the Forum accused those opposing Mutfwang’s defection of working only for their personal interests and federal appointments rather than the growth of the party. It noted that many of those who voted against the governor’s entry into the APC failed to deliver their polling units in the 2023 general elections, adding that some of them even voted for Peter Obi of the Labour Party instead of President Bola Tinubu.

Zazzaga said the Forum’s members in Plateau were excluded from the so-called stakeholders’ meeting, which he described as politically motivated. He argued that Governor Mutfwang’s move to join the APC would strengthen the party’s chances in future elections, especially given the crisis rocking the PDP. He added that those opposing the governor lacked the political credibility to speak for the party, stressing that the focus should be on who can win elections, not on personal ambitions.

The Forum further called for a new approach to party appointments and rewards, suggesting that only individuals who performed well during elections should be considered for federal positions. “Those rushing to Abuja for appointments should present their polling unit results. After the next election, we’ll make public the results so that President Tinubu will know who truly worked for him,” the statement read.

While the Plateau APC dismissed Mutfwang’s claim that he was being pressured to join the party, the Forum insisted that its campaign for his defection was genuine and supported by influential figures in the Presidential Villa. It maintained that convincing Mutfwang to join the APC would serve the best interests of Plateau State and the Tinubu administration, vowing to continue its push until the governor officially switches parties.
