Only politics lacks training for leadership – Obasanjo

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed concern that politics remains the only field where individuals assume leadership positions without any form of structured training. Speaking at the second edition of the Ajibosin Platform symposium in Abeokuta, Ogun State, themed “Importance of Leadership in Governance,” Obasanjo emphasized that leadership requires exposure, experience, training, and character—qualities often neglected in politics.

Obasanjo said it was worrisome that even in unconventional fields such as armed robbery, there exists a form of apprenticeship, while politics allows anyone to jump in without preparation. He noted that this lack of foundational training contributes to poor governance and weak institutions. “If you want to be a teacher, you go for teacher training; but in politics, people just jump in. That’s part of our problem,” the former president lamented.

Delivering his keynote address, former Minister of Aviation Osita Chidoka criticized what he described as Nigeria’s “culture of excuses” and “politics of alibi.” He said the nation’s problems are not due to a shortage of ideas but a lack of strong systems that can sustain good governance beyond individuals. According to Chidoka, leadership should be measured not by charisma or speeches but by the institutions and systems that promote competence and curb corruption.

Chidoka urged Nigerians to reject nepotism and mediocrity, stressing that moral conviction must be backed by effective governance mechanisms. He said true leadership lies in building structures that ensure accountability, efficiency, and continuity even after leaders leave office.

The convener of the symposium, Aare Olanrewaju Bakinson, explained that the lecture was organized to explore the role of ethical and responsible leadership in national development. He said leadership should be about vision, service, and responsibility—not just the pursuit of power. Bakinson emphasized that strong leadership remains the foundation for sustainable governance and meaningful progress in any society.
