Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has insisted that Liverpool remain strong contenders for the Premier League title, despite their recent dip in form. The Spanish tactician warned critics not to rule the Reds out, saying their experience and quality make them capable of bouncing back.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Guardiola reacted to suggestions that Liverpool were already out of the title race after suffering three consecutive league defeats. He pointed to their impressive 5–1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League as proof that Jurgen Klopp’s men are still a serious threat.
As it stands, Liverpool sit four points behind leaders Arsenal, while Manchester City are just one point closer to the top. Both Arsenal and Liverpool will face Crystal Palace and Brentford this weekend, while Manchester United will take on Aston Villa. Guardiola noted that it is too early to make bold predictions about the title race, stressing that the true picture will only emerge after 10 to 15 matches.
“Well, in the first few games people said City were out and Liverpool were done,” Guardiola said. “But Liverpool will be back — they always come back. I know the pundits like to decide the league after five matches, but I’m not like that. It takes time to understand what’s really going on.”
The City boss maintained that Arsenal and Liverpool will continue to pose strong competition, while Manchester City aim to remain in contention for the title as the season progresses. Guardiola’s comments come as City prepare for a crucial away fixture at Aston Villa, with hopes of closing the gap on league leaders Arsenal.
