Alleged abuse of office: Police Service Commission asked to probe AIG

A coalition of human rights activists under the Centre for Human Rights and Advocacy in Africa Network (CHRAAN) has called on the Police Service Commission (PSC) to launch an investigation into alleged misconduct and abuse of office by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Emmanuel Aina.

The activists, who staged a peaceful protest at the PSC headquarters in Abuja, submitted a petition to the Commission’s Chairman, Retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, urging disciplinary action against the senior officer. According to the petition signed by Fabian Opialu, AIG Aina was accused of using his position to favour one Asabe Waziri, a staff member of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), in a property dispute.

The group alleged that AIG Aina unlawfully interfered in a legal matter between Asabe Waziri and Abeh Signature Apartments over two flats located at No. 1 Mekong Close, Maitama, Abuja. Despite a court order restraining Asabe from occupying the property, the AIG reportedly facilitated her return to the premises and allegedly ordered the arrest and detention of human rights lawyer, Victor Giwa, who represented the property owner.

According to CHRAAN, the AIG’s actions disregarded ongoing legal proceedings, including a pending appeal before the Supreme Court, describing the move as “an abuse of power, a violation of civil rights, and a threat to the rule of law.” The group also accused AIG Aina of illegally detaining another person, Godwin Okey, in 2024, and holding Victor Giwa for over ten days in September 2025 without proper legal process.

The petitioners urged the PSC to probe AIG Aina’s conduct, particularly his alleged involvement in breaking into private property, unlawful detentions, and disregard for court orders. They also appealed to the Minister of Police Affairs to ensure accountability and restore public confidence in law enforcement institutions.
