A dramatic scene unfolded in Abuja on Monday when a sports utility vehicle (SUV) accidentally crashed into a barbed electric wire barricade set up by security operatives during the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest.
The electric fence had reportedly been installed by security forces to block protesters demanding the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, from advancing toward restricted areas in the capital.
Eyewitnesses said the vehicle drove straight into the wire as demonstrators screamed in panic. Police officers quickly rushed to the scene, instructing the driver and passengers to remain inside while they disconnected the electricity supply to avoid electrocution.
The incident occurred amid tense clashes between protesters and security agents, as officers fired teargas to disperse crowds and made several arrests, including that of Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor. The protest, which began peacefully, turned chaotic as demonstrators defied warnings from federal authorities not to march near sensitive government buildings.
Authorities have since reaffirmed their stance against unauthorized demonstrations in the capital, citing public safety concerns and court orders. Meanwhile, eyewitnesses reported that the SUV sustained significant damage, though no fatalities were recorded at the scene.
