Protest: Security operatives fired live bullets at us – Sowore

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has accused security operatives of firing live bullets and tear gas at peaceful protesters during the #FreeNnamdiKanu rally in Abuja on Monday.

Speaking on The Morning Brief on Channels Television, Sowore explained that the protesters had gathered peacefully in front of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel before security forces arrived and opened fire. He said the attack came without any provocation from the demonstrators.

“There was no provocation on our part. We promised it would be peaceful. Suddenly, they started shooting—tear gas and even live bullets,” Sowore said.

According to him, several people were arrested and assaulted, including Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother and his lawyer, before being taken to the FCT Police Command. He added that around ten security trucks arrived at the scene moments after the rally began.

Sowore stressed that despite the intimidation, the group would continue to demand justice and freedom for Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The activist also confirmed that no one was hit by live bullets, but condemned the use of force against peaceful protesters exercising their constitutional rights.
