Only president Tinubu can end Nnamdi Kanu’s trial – Ejimakor

Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has declared that only President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has the constitutional authority to bring his client’s ongoing trial to an end. Ejimakor made this known in a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday.

According to the lawyer, the president has the power to halt the prosecution process if he genuinely wants to resolve the matter once and for all. “As it stands, it lies with President Tinubu to free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu because once the President halts the prosecution, the trial ends,” Ejimakor stated. He emphasized that the ultimate decision rests with the president, adding that “the buck stops at the President’s table.”

However, Ejimakor also pointed out that the judiciary still has an important role to play in ensuring justice is not delayed or denied. “Nonetheless, the courts can step in to stem the tide of injustice,” he added.

His statement came amid peaceful demonstrations by pro-Biafra supporters across various parts of the Southeast and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on Monday. The protesters called for Kanu’s unconditional release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), where he has been held since his arrest and extradition in June 2021.

The call by Ejimakor has once again reignited public debate over Kanu’s continued detention and the federal government’s handling of his trial, with many urging President Tinubu to consider a political solution to the long-standing case.
