The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has urged Nigerian youths to avoid participating in the planned ‘Free Nnamdi Kanu’ protest scheduled for October 20, 2025. The council warned that the protest could lead to violence and a breakdown of law and order across parts of the country.
In a statement signed by Barr. Buhari Shehu, Chairman of the NYCN Interim Management Committee, the group expressed concern over the safety of young Nigerians who might be drawn into the demonstration. The NYCN cited a court order obtained by the Nigerian Police Force restraining organizers and participants from holding the protest. It also referenced a security advisory from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, which cautioned its nationals to stay away from protest areas.
The NYCN said it recognizes the right of citizens to express grievances but urged that such actions must be done through lawful and peaceful means. The group emphasized that protests that turn violent could endanger lives and property, adding that the youth must not allow themselves to be used by political or extremist interests.
According to the statement, “We urge all Nigerian youths to exercise restraint and stay out of trouble. The planned protest may result in a breakdown of law and order, which could put lives and property at risk. We implore all youths to prioritize peace, stability, and national unity.”
The council reaffirmed its commitment to working with government agencies and stakeholders to address challenges facing the youth, including unemployment, insecurity, and economic hardship. It ended with a patriotic appeal, reminding young Nigerians that “we have no other country than Nigeria” and urging everyone to help maintain peace and safeguard the nation.
