Nnamdi Kanu: Ohanaeze, South-East Govs, Ministers reject Atiku, Sowore’s nationwide protest

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, South-East governors, and serving ministers from the region have openly rejected the proposed nationwide protest being planned by Atiku Abubakar and Omoyele Sowore over the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The regional leaders described the planned protest as unnecessary and politically motivated, warning that it could destabilize the country and worsen tensions in the South-East.

According to a statement issued after a joint meeting in Enugu, the leaders emphasized that peaceful dialogue and engagement with the Federal Government remain the best ways to secure Kanu’s release. They urged the youth and other supporters in the region not to be drawn into what they called “politically driven agitation” that does not serve the collective interest of Ndigbo or Nigeria.

The Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, Governor Hope Uzodimma, stated that the governors are already in talks with the Presidency to explore diplomatic channels for resolving the issue. He said that protests or nationwide unrest would only make negotiations more difficult and endanger lives and property in the region.

Similarly, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, called on Atiku and Sowore to respect the ongoing peace process between the South-East leaders and the Federal Government. He noted that the issue of Nnamdi Kanu’s detention requires careful handling to prevent escalation, adding that “no responsible leader should encourage actions that could destabilize an already fragile nation.”

Ministers from the South-East also reaffirmed their support for a diplomatic approach, stressing that the region’s focus is on stability, economic recovery, and youth empowerment rather than disruptive protests. They urged Nigerians to allow the legal and political processes to take their course for the sake of peace and national unity.
