Some Nigerian pilots use Indian hemp’ – Orji Kalu accuses NCAA of negligence

Former Abia State Governor and Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has raised serious concerns over the safety of Nigeria’s aviation sector, claiming that some Nigerian pilots use Indian hemp before operating flights. Kalu made the shocking revelation while calling out the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for what he described as negligence in enforcing discipline and regular mental health checks among pilots.

Speaking during a media interaction, Kalu expressed fear that the lack of strict supervision could lead to avoidable air mishaps. He noted that it was alarming to discover that some pilots engage in drug use and that the regulatory body has not done enough to ensure thorough drug and psychological testing within the aviation industry.

The senator stressed that the NCAA must take immediate action by introducing frequent drug screening, mental evaluation, and safety audits to protect passengers and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s aviation system. He said that such lapses show a weak regulatory framework that puts the lives of air travelers at risk.

Kalu further urged the Federal Government to step in and mandate comprehensive reforms across the aviation sector, emphasizing that safety should not be compromised under any circumstance. He insisted that Nigeria cannot afford to treat such a sensitive matter with levity, as aviation safety is directly linked to national integrity and public trust.

His comments have sparked wide reactions, with many Nigerians urging the NCAA to respond and clarify the claims. Aviation experts, however, emphasized that while drug use among pilots is a global concern, Nigeria’s aviation regulators must demonstrate zero tolerance for misconduct to maintain international safety standards.
