Road crashes, fatalities reduced in Abia in 2025 – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced a significant drop in road crashes and fatalities in Abia State for the year 2025, compared to figures recorded in 2024. The revelation was made by the FRSC Sector Commander, Ngozi Ezeoma, during a town hall meeting with stakeholders in Umuahia as part of the 2025 Ember Months campaign.

Ezeoma explained that the improvement was a result of strong collaboration between the FRSC, Abia State government, security agencies, and transport unions. She noted that continuous public sensitisation, driver education, and enforcement of road safety rules have been crucial in reducing the rate of Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) in the state. According to her, the FRSC’s Corporate Strategic Goal Number 1 for 2025 is to achieve at least a 10% reduction in road traffic fatalities and injuries through focused interventions.

Despite the positive results, Ezeoma acknowledged that some major highways in the state still record accident-related deaths and injuries. She emphasized the need for sustained efforts and shared responsibility among all stakeholders to maintain the progress. To ensure safety during the Ember Months, she announced that the FRSC would launch a statewide public enlightenment campaign across motor parks, markets, churches, and mosques.

The Sector Commander also revealed that mobile courts would be deployed to prosecute traffic offenders promptly, while driver re-certification and pre-trip vehicle inspections will be conducted in partnership with transport unions. This, she said, would ensure that only roadworthy vehicles and certified drivers operate on the highways.

Speaking at the event, the FRSC Public Education Officer, J.K. Igbonekwu, dismissed the myth that road accidents during Ember Months are caused by “blood-sucking demons.” He instead blamed reckless driving, speeding, and impatience as the real causes. Similarly, Abia State Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, cautioned motorists against endangering lives and pledged continued government support for the FRSC’s life-saving campaigns.
