The Lagos State Government has refuted reports linking it to the recent demolition of structures in FESTAC Town, clarifying that the exercise was not authorised by the state. The clarification was made in a statement titled “Lagos Government Denies Involvement in FESTAC Demolition”, issued by Mukaila Sanusi, Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.
According to the statement, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, made it clear that the Lagos State Government had no involvement in the demolitions carried out in the area. He stressed that the government follows a transparent and lawful process for all demolition exercises, which includes issuing statutory notices and consulting with affected residents and stakeholders.
Olumide emphasised that any demolition conducted without official clearance from the ministry does not represent the position or practice of the present administration. “We want to assure residents that the Lagos State Government remains committed to fairness, due process, and the protection of property rights. Any demolitions carried out without proper authorisation do not reflect the position or practice of this administration,” he stated.
The commissioner further urged all agencies — including federal bodies operating within Lagos — to seek official clearance from the ministry before undertaking any demolition activity. He reiterated that inter-agency coordination is essential to prevent confusion and protect the interests of property owners.
This clarification followed a series of demolitions that occurred in FESTAC’s 6th Avenue, where over 15 buildings were reportedly demolished over the weekend, leaving traders and shop owners in shock as bulldozers moved from one structure to another.
