Nigeria seeks $2bn China loan for new ‘super grid’ — Adelabu

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has revealed that the Federal Government is seeking a $2 billion loan from China to fund the construction of a new super grid system aimed at improving power transmission across the country.

Adelabu explained that the project is part of the government’s plan to strengthen Nigeria’s electricity network and reduce frequent blackouts. The proposed super grid will complement the existing transmission infrastructure, ensuring stable and efficient power distribution to homes and industries.

He noted that discussions with Chinese financial institutions are already in progress, emphasizing that the government’s focus is on expanding the transmission capacity to meet growing energy demands. The Power Minister added that the project, once completed, will mark a major milestone in achieving energy stability and industrial growth.

The super grid initiative forms part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader economic agenda to modernize Nigeria’s power sector and attract foreign investment into energy development.
